>I feel(seat of the pants) I have less powerI feel that removng the snorkel provides no power gain at all. It may, in fact, cost power to remove the snorkel. I tried several runs at Neon97 (in a '97 DOHC ACR Coupe) with and without the snorkel. Although the results weren't shockingly clear, the trend was that the car was no faster (sometimes, slower) with the snorkel removed.
I suspected that (mong other things) intake air temp actually *increased* if the snorkel was removed. Last fall, I tried to prove this experimentally. I drove the ACR Coupe at a steady 60 mph over a given distance (about 3 miles) and monitored the Intake Air Temp sensor reading (using the DRB III) at the end of the run. I compared "with snorkel" against "without snorkel" over the course of 6 runs. The results, again, were not clear cut. Sometimes, the IAT increased with the snorkel removed. Other runs, it didn't. I will try to re-test this summer when ambient temps are higher -- I tested last fall with temps in the 50's. I have not discussed my results on the list until now because I couldn't draw a concrete conclusion...but you can see where my gut feeling is.
My feeling is that folks are mistaking more sound for more power...
BTW -- I presume that your '95 SS is an SOHC. You *definitely* don't want to remove your snorkel; unlike all DOHCs and '96+ SOHCs, yours doesn't suck up the freshly warmed air from the radiator. Some belive that the '95 SOHC filter setup can be worth marginally more power...
